We took Ashlyn to get ice cream tonight. It was her reward for going without her binki last night. She had no idea why she was getting a special treat, but it made me feel better about the whole ordeal. I think we went more for my benefit than hers.
She actually did pretty well without her binki. She woke up once at 3:30. I was feeding Trent - I think he woke her - so Brian went in to comfort her. Ashlyn's bedroom is right next door to ours, and this is what I heard:
Ashlyn: (crying) I want my binki!
Brian: Shhh. It's okay.
Ashlyn: pwease.
Brian: It's gone.
Ashlyn: PWEASE!
Brian: I'm sorry baby, it's gone.
Ashlyn: PWEASE!!! (with desperation in her voice, followed by more crying)
It broke my heart! Especially since she was asking so nicely. We have been working on saying please rather than whining. She then asked for "mommy" again and again, and I went to her aid just as soon as I could. She calmed down as soon as I picked her up which made me feel great! That means I am more comforting to her than an inanimate object - woohoo! I rocked her back to sleep and she slept soundly the rest of the night.
So the whole experience was not as bad as I thought it would be, but it is not over yet. She has asked for her "binkers" a couple times today and I am sure she will cry again tonight. But we made it through the first 24 hours, so I think we will be able to handle the rest.
Ashlyn has also been asking two questions lately that make Brian and I crack up. First off, she is going through the 'why?' stage. But she has combined 'why' with 'how come' to make, "why come?". Of course no answer is good enough, so it's "why come?" over and over and over again. Secondly, certain bodily functions have become quite humorous to her. Whenever she toots she asks, (with a big smile on her face) "Ya hear that?"

Congratulations on the no binkie! That is awesome. Ashlyn is such a little doll. Hopefully tonight goes well!
Ashlyn's saying of "Why come" reminds me of a Brian Regan joke where he is trying to say good luck then he thinks he should say take care and then what comes out is Take Luck. very funny. Ashlyn will get used to going without her binki, but it may take a little time. Her conversation with Brian made me want to cry.
I am not looking forward to getting rid of Addi-poo's. Good luck, you are doing awesome!
Good job for holding strong! Ice cream is a great reward, I wonder what I can make my kids give up so we can go enjoy ice cream??!!!
Oh Jamie... they sure do know how to tug at our heart strings. Nohting is more comforting than a parents cuddle and love. A few more nights of that and she'll forget about the binks. And maybe even a few more nights of ice cream wouldn't hurt either! As far as the humorous bodily functions go... this is just the beginning.
Good job Ash Belle! We're so proud of you. Next time you celebrate with ice cream, give us a call.
I hear dat!
LOL! What cute things Ashlyn is saying. Good job on the 24-free of the bink. I hope it continues.
Yeah, I'm with Mindy~ I'm always up for celebrating with ice cream...
Next time I toot I'm going to look at Ben and ask him the same thing. ha ha ha
WAY TO GO ASHLYN!!! I always knew she was a champ! But there aren't any more posts...does that mean she has a binky now?? :-) Doubt it. Mom's pretty strong!
That cracks me up! I can't wait to see you guys!
